I don't know if you have this concept of carma points (Brian said he never heard of it until he met me), but I am a total believer. You build up car karma (hence the spelling "car"ma) points every time that you do something nice for a fellow driver, such as letting someone in front of you.
Well, with this recent car ding episode, I have depleted my reserve (and then some)!
On Friday, I got a call from the owner of the other car. She told me the total damage came to $11.88. Now, I know that I *slightly* overreact at things (Can you hear Brian laughing? :-), but seriously, I did some noticeable damage to this woman's car. I couldn't believe how the quote for the damages could be so low. I thought she must go to one heck of a body shop.
Today, we met for lunch, so I could give her the check. She told me that she and her husband had decided not to charge me for the damage. I tried to insist. I even told her to take the check and not cash it (just to make me feel better), but she wouldn't. She said that her mechanic was able to buff out the paint (for no charge) and that their out of pocket expense was for the touchup paint. Because they still have most of the paint, they didn't want to charge me.
I thought "Wow! And here I was afraid that I was going to be sued or something". That's when I found out that her husband sells pre-paid legal services. So although he isn't a lawyer but he knows a lot of good ones.
That's when I knew that I can cashed in my bank of carma points. I'd say that I am one lucky duck!!! :0)
