For the first time in my life, I'm a mentor. It is hard for me to believe that I have been in this job long enough to be a mentor. Of course, with so many people leaving our department in the past 2 years, I am the third most senior person in my group, which again amazes me.
I also don't know if I am the best person to be a mentor. Lately, my job has been making me miserable. If it weren't for the good friends that I had here, I'd probably go insane. (I'm sure Brian going insane hearing about it.)
Well, anyway last Friday was my first mentoring day. I'm guessing that our new person is 5 - 7 years younger than I am. I wouldn't think that small of an age difference would be that noticeable. Ha! Was I wrong. It is obvious that there are some generational differences in those 5 years. For example, my new pupil calls me chickie and sends me email saying "That's printastic!". I'm sorry. But when I started working here, I never would have called anyone chickie, especially not to their face (no matter what their age). I joked with some of my co-workers that I am going to start calling my boss "dude" and see how he reacts. My new pupil is exhausting. She is so energetic and rearing to go; it is impossible for me to keep up with her. Yet, I'll try. Goodness knows, I am tiring of conducting job interviews. Blah.

"Chickie?" "Printastic?" You poor woman....
I can't say I've heard anyone use "Chickie" before. "Printastic" is interesting, and would seem to be only useful if you were talking about, well, printing something really cool.
Well who knows? By the time this is over, I might have a whole new vocabulary.
That would be vocabulous!
I'm going to pretend I didn't hear any of this.
