Although I don't think Herb was an awful coach (he did get us to the NCAA how many years in a row?), I will admit that I was one of the people screaming for him to be gone. Under his guidance, we might have a great team, but we lacked passion, which means that the State fans had lost much hope.
So out went Herb and in came Sidney Lowe, a player on the famous 1983 championship team. When State hired Coach Lowe, it seemed to me that his primary selling point was that he was on that team. And I worried about what we were getting into. Sometimes, it seems like that championship was a blessing and a curse. That win set a standard that we have been trying to live up to ever since. And of course, every coach since has been trying to fill Jimmy V's shoes. He is the coach who defines NC State basketball (at least for this generation).
So in walks ear-piercing whistling, red jacket wearing Sidney Lowe trying to bring us back to the days of glory. Can he do it? I guess time will tell, but after this season and more importantly after this weekend's ACC tourney, he's brought back the passion to Wolfpack basketball. (I would love to know what he said to those guys or what magic red kool-aid he was giving them to drink the locker room. 4 intensive games in 4 days, and that team fought hard through every one of them. I was so proud!)
Well, Sidney, you've made a believer out of me. So feel free to buy your $700 suits. I think you're going to be around for a while.
