Good grief. Have you ever listened to some of these children songs? They are SO depressing. I am so glad little one doesn't understand what they mean, but still . . .
We recently got 4 Disney CDs to listen to the car as we travel to and from work. Apparently, NPR or Christmas carols or classical music isn't entertaining enough. You would think "Disney songs that should be okay".
Yikes! I swear half the songs are what I would call "Southern" songs or songs about Westward expansion.
Example of Southern songs include:
* On Top of Old Smokey (where you lose your true love)
* Jimmy Crack Corn (the master has gone away and died)
* You Are My Sunshine (I don't know if this one is southern, but man, it is sad.)
Of course, there are some happier southern songs too like Oh Susanna and Dixie.
Examples of westward expansion:
* Clementine (who drowns)
* I've Been Working on the Railroad (I've been working on the railroad just to pass the time away)
* then there is one song about a guy who is trying to marry an 11 year old. I know they married earlier back then, but 11? That's a big young. Gross.
The only "Northern" song that I remember is Yankee Doodle Dandy. I guess I should be glad that little one is learning a little American history. I just wish we could put a happier spin on it. ;-)

I didn't know anyone still listened to those songs! To be honest, thinking about those songs makes me want to play Civ IV. Get those workers out there building railroads!
